Costco operates 570 fuel centers across the United States, spread over 47 states with the largest network in California (121 stations). Nationally, regular gas averages $4.144, premium runs about $0.63 higher at $4.772, and diesel sits at $5.560. Pump prices vary widely by region: Puerto Rico averages the lowest at $1.027 while California averages the highest at $5.307, a roughly $4.28 swing driven by local taxes, fuel-blend rules, and transport costs. Nationally, regular pump prices have eased about $0.46 over the past month, from $4.603 a month ago. Premium has eased about $0.44 and diesel has eased about $0.40 over the same period. Diesel is sold at 63 of the 570 U.S. locations.

30-day U.S. average price trend

Costco is consistently ranked among the cheapest places to fill up in the country, and has repeatedly topped GasBuddy's list of the cheapest U.S. fuel chains. The reason is structural: fuel is a loss-leader that Costco runs on thin margins to pull members into the warehouse, and its bulk purchasing power lets it negotiate hard with suppliers. Independent measurements peg the typical saving at around 20 cents a gallon below the local average. For a driver who burns close to 490 gallons a year, that gap alone can more than cover the cost of membership — we run the break-even math in Is Costco gas worth it?

You need a membership — with one exception. The pump reads your Costco membership card before it dispenses, so fuel is members-only ($65 a year for Gold Star, $130 for Executive). The exception is the Costco Shop Card, a prepaid card that anyone can use at the pump, even without a membership.

It's card-only at the pump. There's no cash at Costco gas stations. In the U.S. the pumps take any Visa credit card, PIN debit, the Costco Shop Card, and Apple Pay or Google Pay linked to a Visa — but not Mastercard, American Express, or Discover. Canada is the mirror image (Mastercard, not Visa), and the UK and Australia follow their own rules. See the full breakdown in our Costco gas payment methods guide.

The fuel is Top Tier. A low price doesn't mean low quality. Costco's Kirkland Signature gasoline is Top Tier certified — it carries more engine-cleaning detergent than the EPA requires, the standard major automakers recommend — and it's refined at the same regional terminals that supply name-brand stations. Most warehouses sell regular and premium; diesel is available at a subset of locations, noted on each station page.

Prices change daily and vary by region. Pump prices track wholesale markets and differ widely from state to state because of local taxes, fuel-blend rules, and transport costs — the figures on this page refresh daily from public sources. To see what Costco charges where you live, check the state leaderboard or find your nearest station. As always, confirm the price at the pump before filling up.
